How To Get The Best Out Of Your Bedding

Nedz Pro

1) In a clean, dry stable free from bedding, place six to eight bales of Nedz Pro (depending on the size of the stable).

2) Set the bed as desired but ensure that it has a minimum depth of 3 – 4 inches across the base, with greater depth for the banks. To help settle the bed and reduce initial movement, gently pat across the surface with the back of the shavings fork.

3) Remove droppings daily and reset the bed as required. It may walk around a little on the first day, but, once it has been reset then, it is unlikely to move around thereafter.

4) At the end of the week, it is usually advisable to remove the wet. By skimming off the dry top surface gradually in layers and throwing it up the banks, you will find the wet is clearly defined in patches at the base of the bed and can be easily removed.

5) Once any wet is removed, the bed can be re-laid and topped up as required to ensure the minimum depth is maintained.

Troubleshooting

1) If you find that the wet is coming through to the surface, then the base is not deep enough to provide the necessary filtration to the bottom of the bed. Obviously some horses are wetter than others so the depth of the bed may need to be altered accordingly. Do not be tempted to remove the wet during the week, unless doing a full muck out, as the bedding is very absorbent and even the wet areas will have the capacity to soak up more. If you do still find a wet area, cover it with a shallow layer of dry bedding which will act as a top filter.

2) Most horses do not walk this bedding around once it has been set. However, if your horse does manage to keep moving the bed in certain areas make sure that you place the older bedding in those areas when resetting the bed. If your horse is not too wet, it can also help to leave the bed down for two weeks and just top up with a bale of bedding at the end of the first week. Patting the bed down firmly with a shavings fork when resetting will also help ensure that it does not walk around the stable.

Nedz Original

1) In a clean, dry stable free from bedding, place around four to six bales of Nedz Original (depending on the size of the stable).

2) Set the bed as required, although for a traditional bed ensure a good base. Patting down the bedding with a shavings fork will help to settle the bed into shape and will provide secure banks if needed.

3) Nedz Original is flexible and so can be mucked out daily as with traditional beds, removing the droppings and any wet areas and topping up as required, or can be deep littered for the week, removing droppings only, and mucked out fully at the end of the week. If you choose to do the latter, the base of the bed will need to be deep enough to keep the surface dry and so may need topping up mid-week.

Troubleshooting

If your horse is moving the bedding around, make sure that it is reset and patted firmly into place daily to help. Alternatively, leaving the wet in until the end of the week can help stabilise the bed and reduce this effect.
